ナミビアで象牙８トンを競売、日本と中国が落札

『　アフリカ南部ナミビアで２８日、象牙の競売が実施され、日本と中国の業者が計７．９トンを約１２０万ドル（約１億１５００万円）で落札した。平均価格は１キロあたり１６４ドル（約１万５６００円）で、日本が３．７トン、中国が４．２トンを購入した。

象牙の取り引きは、絶滅のおそれのある野生動植物の種の国際取引に関する条約（ＣＩＴＥＳ、ワシントン条約）により、１９８９年から全面的に禁止されていた。

しかし、ゾウの生息数の回復したと見られる国々が流通管理に問題ないとされた日本と中国に対して一時的に販売することを認めた。

象牙の競売を実施するのはナミビアのほか、ボツワナとジンバブエ、南アフリカ。販売量はボツワナが４８トン、ジンバブエが４トン、南アフリカが５６トンとなっている。

象牙の取引が一時認められたことにより、今後、象の密猟が増えるのではないか、と懸念されている。』

Ivory has been a most prestigious material for carving.

The first ivory auction in a decade sold over 7 tons of tusks to Chinese and Japanese bidders Tuesday, raising more than $1 million for elephant conservation.The sale took place under a special exemption to the international ban on trade in ivory.

Last year the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species(CITES) ruled that Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe could make a one-time sale of 108 tons of government ivory stocks.
Some environmentalists have condemned the sales, fearing it will encourage smuggling and poaching.

Tuesday's auction, held behind closed doors in the capital, was monitored by Willem Wijnstekers, CITES Secretary General. In all, 7.2 tons of ivory were sold, fetching a total of $1.3 million at an average price of $164 per kilogram (2.2 pounds).
The two Chinese and two Japanese buyers were not named.

Most of the tusks came from elephants who died of natural causes. Southern Africa is home to about 300,000 elephants — half of all the giant creatures on the continent.
Namibia had expected to sell over 9 tons of ivory and the remaining tusks will be distributed to communities involved in making traditional jewelry.
Over 44 tons will be sold in Botswana on Friday, while auctions next month will see 51 tons being offered in South Africa and almost 4 tons offered in Zimbabwe.
No new sales from the four southern African countries will be allowed for the next nine years.

Ivory trade was banned globally in 1989, but reviving elephant populations allowed African countries to make a one-time sale a decade later to Japan, the only country which had previously won the right to import.
In July, CITES said China should also be allowed to bid for ivory as it had dramatically improved its enforcement of ivory trade rules.

The organization said it will monitor Chinese and Japanese domestic trade controls to ensure traders do not use this opportunity to sell ivory of illegal origin.　』

一度禁止されたのに、こういうことしてたら、非難の嵐だよね。しかも中国といっしょになんて。
象牙製品を買う人がいなければ、こういう取引も成り立たないのに。象牙って何をつくるの？ハンコとか？ビリヤードの珠とか？別に、象牙じゃなくてもいいよね。
自然に死んだ象の象牙だあったら、有効利用もありだと思うけど、自然に死んだのか密猟によって殺されたのか、象牙だけ見たんじゃ判別できないしね。象牙の“需要”をなくすしかないんだろうね。

In Japan, Ivory has been used to make billiard balls, jewelry, Inkan etc....
Inkan are the name stamps used on formal documents instead of a signature in East Asia. Because each is custom-made and unique, it has a legal status similar to (but not quite as serious as) a signature in Western countries.

As long as ivory is in demand for making these product, the ivory trade will be never end.
We should use substitute materials to replace ivory.
It is a big shame not only because Japan drive African ivory trade but also Japan do this with China!

Ralph Nader - My New Hero!

11月4日のアメリカの大統領選挙まであと9日。
オバマとマッケイン、二人の候補者の話題しか耳にしないけど、実は、ほかにも立候補者がいるって知ってた？
ほかの候補者のうちの一人、Ralph Nader(ラルフネイダー/ラルフネーダー)ってひとが、とっても魅力のある人物なの。

過去に何度かグリーンパーティー（緑の党）所属、または無所属で大統領選挙に立候補したけど落選。今回の選挙も無所属で立候補。
民主党、共和党、この2大政党はお金とパワーがあるから、新聞、テレビで大々的にオバマ、マッケインを広告・宣伝してるけど、ラルフネイダーのことはニュースなどで取り上げらることすら稀なの。

ダーリンが図書館で借りてきた、彼のドキュメンタリー映画『 An unreasonable MAN 』をみたんだけど、もともとは消費者の権利を守ろう、と強欲で利益の追求のみ優先する大企業を相手に戦ってきた弁護士・活動家なの。
今でこそ車の座席にシートベルトがついてるのは、当たり前だけど、もともとは彼の運動が発端となり、法令化されたのね。
アメリカの自動車会社を相手に“運転者の安全に対する投資・取り組みをするべきだ”と訴えたものだから、一時は企業に雇われた探偵に尾行もされたらしい。

その他、原子力発電、食品の安全性、環境問題と関わっていて、国民は税金を吸い上げられているのに、税金面などで優遇・恩恵を受けている大企業を批判。
大企業にきちんと法人税を払わせればどれだけ国が潤うことかと熱く語るラルフネイダー。

2000年、2004年の大統領選挙で、民主党にいくべき票がラルフネイダーに流れたため、民主党が敗北、その結果、ブッシュ政権が誕生することになり、彼の出馬が批判されたそうだけれど、アホなブッシュを選出した共和党を支持するアホなアメリカ人が大勢いる、ってことがそもそも問題なのであって、彼を責めるなんてお門違いもいいところ。

オバマＶＳマッケインがやった大統領候補討論会、なぜ他の候補者が平等に討論する機会が与えられないのかというと、あの討論会を運営しているのがThe Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) という元民主党・共和党の関係者による組織で、スポンサーは息のかかった大企業。
ラルフ　ネイダーを大統領にさせてなるものか、っていうメンバーで構成されている組織なのね。

ドキュメンタリー映画の中で、2000年の選挙の際、ゴアＶＳブッシュの討論会があって、ラルフネイダーのファンの学生が父親からもらった討論会のチケットを“ぜひ討論会にいって討論に参加してください”とラルフネイダーに送ったの。
でも、討論会の会場では、討論会を運営するThe Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) に阻止されて、会場にすら入れてもらえなかったの。チケットあるのに。ひどい横暴でしょ。
なんか、大統領選挙も何もかも、汚れきってるカンジよね。

74歳と高齢だけど、結婚をすることもなく、ただひたすらシゴトに没頭して働き続けてきた彼。
倹約家で、その昔は、すりきれて穴のあいたスーツを着てても気にしないくらいだったんだって。
両親はレバノンからの移民で、子供たちには小さなころから自分の頭で考えて自分の言葉で発言する、という習慣を身に付けさせたそう。

ちょっと大げさかもしれないけど、このラルフネイダーとキリストがダブっちゃって。
私はクリスチャンじゃないけどさ。
正しいことを行おうとすると必ず困難や受難がついてまわって、でも“私利私欲、私心のない正しいこと”というのははじめは難しくても、いずれ人々に受け入れられていく、というか。
他の政治家は裏切っても、このラルフネイダーはみんなを裏切らない、って思うもん。
まるで聖人君主のようなラルフネイダー。
こんな人が大統領になったらいいのにね。

Nader's accomplishments have become part of the fabric of American public life.
You know that clause on plane tickets that says that if you're bumped, the airline has to reimburse you and put you up for the night?
Nader got bumped from an overbooked flight and got angry, and that's why you get treated fairly now.

Remember the days before seat belts and air bags?
Nader wrote an article for the Nation in 1959 titled "The Safe Car You Can't Buy" and ranted as early as 1975 to Congress that all auto manufacturers should have to install air bags in their cars.
People said Nader was a nut.
Now car companies advertise that their air bags are the best.

庭に飛んできた子供達の野球ボールを返さず逮捕

オハイオに住む89歳の女性が、彼女の庭に飛んできた近所の子供たちのボールを返却さず逮捕された、というハナシ。
以前からトラブルになっていたようで、子供の親が警察に訴え、窃盗容疑で逮捕へとなったらしい。
6ヶ月の禁固刑と1000ドル（約10万）の罰金が課されるらしい。

本当だったら、子供の親が、おばあさんのところに、菓子折りでも持って“いつもボｰルがお宅の庭に飛んでいって申し訳ありません”と、お詫びに行くほうじゃないの？

89-year-old charged with keeping kids' ball

『　BLUE ASH, Ohio - Police in Ohio say an 89-year-old woman is facing a charge of petty theft because neighborhood children accuse her of refusing to give back their football.

Edna Jester was arrested last week in the Cincinnati suburb of Blue Ash.

Police say one child's father complained that Jester kept the youngsters' ball after it landed in her yard.
Police Capt. James Schaffer says there has been an ongoing dispute in the neighborhood over kids' balls landing in the woman's yard.

Jester said Monday she has received many calls and didn't have time to discuss the matter any more.

Jester is to appear in court next month. The maximum penalty for a petty theft conviction in Ohio is six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.　』

"Keep your balls off my yard you damn kids!"

If they want to keep their balls, they should keep them out of her yard.
Isn't an object on her property considered trespass?
They should be ashamed for trying to charge her.

アニメ「ドラえもん」にも、近所のカミナリさん（神成さん）っていう怖いおじさんがいたよね。のび太達が空き地で野球をしてるとカミナリさんの庭にボールが飛んで行っちゃって、盆栽とかガラスとかを割るたびにおそるおそるカミナリさんの家に謝りにいく、っていう。

「神成」は名字。趣味は盆栽で、植物をこよなく愛する。
盆栽を見る目は確かで、破損した盆栽の代わりにとのび太が持って来た盆栽（ドラえもんの道具を使って選んだ一番良いもの）を一目見て「いい盆栽だ」と言い当てている。隣の空き地から野球のボール、石、ドラえもんのひみつ道具等が誤って飛び込み、よく家の窓ガラスを割られ、自慢の盆栽を植木鉢もろとも壊される。
そのたびに怒鳴り散らすため、子供たちからは「雷おやじ」として恐れられている。
しかし、鉢の移動や窓ガラス周辺の保護等はしたことがない。
通常はジャイアン達が逃げようとするため怒鳴り、説教をするが素直に謝ってきた場合は許すこともある。
かわいい親戚の女の子・ミズエがいることでも知られている。』

性犯罪者のハロウィーン規制 Sex offender Halloween alert

毎年10月31日に行われるハロウィーン。

子供から大人まで魔女やお化け、その他色々なキャラクターに仮装して、パレードをしたり、子供達が近所の家を回って、Trick or treat.（お菓子をくれなきゃ、いたずらするぞ）といってお菓子をもらったりする行事。

でも、近所に仮釈放されたり、保護観察中の性犯罪者たちが近所に住んでいる、なんてこともあるので、親達はとっても心配。

子供にお菓子をあげないように、とか、夕方の一定時間には、誰かが尋ねてきても応答しないように、また手錠をかけて家からでないようにしたり、一箇所に性犯罪者たちを集めて子供たちと接触しないように、とか色々策をねっているらしい。

自分の近所に住む性犯罪者をリサーチできる政府のウェブサイトがあるで、保護者たちこのウェブサイトで事前にチェックするように呼びかけている、とのこと。
そのウェブサイトには、州政府に登録されている性犯罪者の名前、顔写真、住所などが乗っているの。

The Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services plans to check on the nearly 1,200 sex offenders it monitors through phone calls and home checks. The agency says offenders cannot host parities, give out candy or even have their outdoor lights on from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Halloween.

Last year, several South Carolina counties required all sex offenders to show up at events at the sheriff’s office on Halloween.
Authorities also recommend parents check the state’s sexual offender registry before letting children go trick-or-treating.

Shockingly, more sex offenders came up than I expected.

And they all look normal and average who could be anywhere and familiar to me but I am not sure.

組員は恐喝罪に問われている山口組系の赤木聖被告（３８）。支払いに応じなかった場合のハンバーガー代の請求先は山口組の篠田建市（通称司忍）６代目組長だった。
赤木被告は６月下旬、ドライブスルーでハンバーガーセットを購入する際、入れ墨を見せつけて「雨でぬれた。どないしてくれんねん」と因縁を付け、代金を支払わず脅し取ったとされる。』

A punk who belongs to the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest yakuza group in Japan, ordered a hamburger combo at a hamburger shop in Kyoto, Japan. He then shockingly refused to pay his tab for $8.

The restaurant called the police. They then called the punk and warned him that they were going to claim compensation for the loss to his mob boss if he did not pay.

The punk, flustered, quickly returned and paid for his hamburger.

A new Japanese law that went into effect this August restricts the yakuza's activity and protects people from extortion and threats.

This new law allows anyone to claim compensation for damages or loss caused by a yakuza member from the mob boss (the highest ranking person in the organization).

This is the first time someone tried to apply this law since it was instituted.
I guess this punk will be "sleeping with the fishes" soon.

According to a police report, Maryanne O'Neill, 66, ordered coffee and a sandwich at a Waffle House restaurant on Saturday but refused to pay the bill.

The restaurant called the police. A police officer asked O'Neill to pay or go to jail and she refused to pay.

A jail official says she was released Monday from the St. Lucie County Jail. She is charged with obtaining food or lodging with intent to defraud, a second degree misdemeanor. If convicted of a second degree misdemeanor she could face up to 60 days in jail and a fine of $500.

California Academy of Science

5年のリニューアルを経て、9月末にリニューアルオープンしたカリフォルニア・アカデミー・オブ・サイエンス。
ゴルデンゲートパーク内にあります。
先日、職場で使っていない夏休み（有給休暇）があったので、さっそくいってきました。通常、入館料が25ドルもとられるそうですが、毎月第3水曜日は、入館料タダになるので、水曜日をねらって。

シティバンクかウェルズ・ファルゴが、買い取るとか何とかってやってた、例のWachovia（ワコーヴィア）がスポンサーなんだって。
吸収合併とかされると、こういうスポンサーの話も変わってくるのかな。

さて、月～土曜日は9時半にオープンするけど、ゆっくりでかけて午前10時到着。
期待はしてたけど、すでに長い行列が。

でも、どんどん前に進んだので、待ち時間は15-20分くらい。

熱帯雨林の鳥や蝶々などが生息するレインフォーレストドーム、プラネタリウム、地下には熱帯魚やホワイトアリゲーターなどが見アクアリウム。

プラネタリウムは、混んでると時間ごとの整理券が配られるので、到着したら、まず一番に整理券をもらいにいくといいでしょう。

ついてすぐ整理券をもらったけど、午後1：30の整理券でした。
約3時間半も待ち時間があったので、亀をみたり、熱帯魚を見たり。

屋上の屋根一面にはカルフォルニア原産の草花が植えられていたり、断熱材には
リサイクルのジーンズが使われていたり、デザインの一部かのように見える庇の
部分にソーラーパネルが組み込まれていたり、建物はなかなか興味深い。

そういえば、東京都でも、少し前に一定規模の大きさの新築・改築建築物屋上の
緑化を義務付ける条例を制定ってやってたよね。

環境面は日本は進んでるよね、っていうかアメリカが遅れてるのかな。
未だにゴミ分別、やってないしね。

この日、気に入ったのは、熱帯魚と亀たち。 タダだから、ま、いっかーってかんじだけど、“これで25ドルもとられたら頭に
くるわ”ってのが感想。

This Wednesday I used my paid vacation and took a day off and went to the new California Academy of Science.

It reopened recently after five years of renovation.

Free admission is available to visitors on the third Wednesday of every month, presented by Wachovia.

I wonder if Wachovia is bought and merges with Citigroup or Wells Fargo, will the sponsorship deal be changed?

Although Academy of Science opens at 9:30 a.m., I arrived there around 10:00 a.m. and as I expected, there was already a long line of people waiting to get in. I had to wait to get in for about 15-20 mintues and it wasn't so bad.

There is a rain forest dome, an aquarium and planetarium in one building.
There was another long line to get in the rain forest dome and I did not want to wait in the line anymore so I gave up.

Before I went there, I had checked on the website "Yelp! " that there was a Planetarium Show every hour and need a ticket to get in, so I immediately went to the Planetarium and got my ticket to the Planetarium for 1:30PM.
I waited for three and half hours until the show started. Ay yay yay!!

I then went down a floor and enjoyed a beautiful, relaxing view of fish among beautiful coral reefs in the water tank.

Then I went up to the roof.
There were some interesting things about the building.

1. Recycled denim is used as insulation for the building.

2. A solar canopy around the roof contains 60,000 photovoltaic cells.
The black voltaic cells look like a part of its design and I even did not notice until I saw a sign explaining them.

This solar canopy supplies 5 to 10 percent of the academy's energy needs and prevents the release of more than 405,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

3. The rooftop of the building, called the "Living Roof", is covered with native California flowers.

Typical black tar-and-asphalt building rooftops cause a phenomenon known as the "Urban Heat Island" effect.
The endless swath of black rooftops and pavement trap heat, causing cities to be 6 to 10 degrees warmer than outlying greenbelt areas.
One-sixth of all electricity consumed in the U.S. goes to cool buildings.

The Academy's green rooftop keeps the building's interior an average of 10 degrees cooler than a standard roof would.
The plants also transform carbon dioxide into oxygen, capture rainwater, and reduce energy needs for heating and cooling.

What I liked the most at the Academy were the Aqualium and the turtles.

The Academy was okay to spend a couple of hours at because it was free.
But I would have been so upset if I had to pay $25 to get in there!

バナナと便通

今まで、便秘知らずだった、この私ですが、タバコとお酒をやめてから、便秘に悩まされてます。
昔は、お腹が“ゆるい”くらいだったのに。あの頃が懐かしい。

腹筋を使う運動をしたり（たまに）、野菜もたっぷりとってるし、果物もなるべく摂る様にしてたんだけどね。
その点、ダーリンは、毎朝、ピッタリ決まった時間に便通がきて、羨ましい。
しかも、ゆるすぎず、固すぎず、ちょうどよい感じなの。
同じものを食べてるのになんでこうも違うのか、不思議よね。

色々試して、最近調子がいいのが、バナナ。
バナナダイエットってのが、流行りらしいので、私も試してみた。
朝は、なるべくバナナだけ。
お腹いっぱいになるまでいくらでも食べてもいいんだって。まあ、そんなに食べれるもんじゃないけどね。水を飲むのがちょっとつらいけど、味気なくて。
今のところ、ダイエットの効果はぜんぜんでてないけど（悲）、便通にはきいてるみたい。
