California Academy of Science

5年のリニューアルを経て、9月末にリニューアルオープンしたカリフォルニア・アカデミー・オブ・サイエンス。
ゴルデンゲートパーク内にあります。
先日、職場で使っていない夏休み（有給休暇）があったので、さっそくいってきました。通常、入館料が25ドルもとられるそうですが、毎月第3水曜日は、入館料タダになるので、水曜日をねらって。

シティバンクかウェルズ・ファルゴが、買い取るとか何とかってやってた、例のWachovia（ワコーヴィア）がスポンサーなんだって。
吸収合併とかされると、こういうスポンサーの話も変わってくるのかな。

さて、月～土曜日は9時半にオープンするけど、ゆっくりでかけて午前10時到着。
期待はしてたけど、すでに長い行列が。

でも、どんどん前に進んだので、待ち時間は15-20分くらい。

熱帯雨林の鳥や蝶々などが生息するレインフォーレストドーム、プラネタリウム、地下には熱帯魚やホワイトアリゲーターなどが見アクアリウム。

プラネタリウムは、混んでると時間ごとの整理券が配られるので、到着したら、まず一番に整理券をもらいにいくといいでしょう。

ついてすぐ整理券をもらったけど、午後1：30の整理券でした。
約3時間半も待ち時間があったので、亀をみたり、熱帯魚を見たり。

屋上の屋根一面にはカルフォルニア原産の草花が植えられていたり、断熱材には
リサイクルのジーンズが使われていたり、デザインの一部かのように見える庇の
部分にソーラーパネルが組み込まれていたり、建物はなかなか興味深い。

そういえば、東京都でも、少し前に一定規模の大きさの新築・改築建築物屋上の
緑化を義務付ける条例を制定ってやってたよね。

環境面は日本は進んでるよね、っていうかアメリカが遅れてるのかな。
未だにゴミ分別、やってないしね。

この日、気に入ったのは、熱帯魚と亀たち。 タダだから、ま、いっかーってかんじだけど、“これで25ドルもとられたら頭に
くるわ”ってのが感想。

This Wednesday I used my paid vacation and took a day off and went to the new California Academy of Science.

It reopened recently after five years of renovation.

Free admission is available to visitors on the third Wednesday of every month, presented by Wachovia.

I wonder if Wachovia is bought and merges with Citigroup or Wells Fargo, will the sponsorship deal be changed?

Although Academy of Science opens at 9:30 a.m., I arrived there around 10:00 a.m. and as I expected, there was already a long line of people waiting to get in. I had to wait to get in for about 15-20 mintues and it wasn't so bad.

There is a rain forest dome, an aquarium and planetarium in one building.
There was another long line to get in the rain forest dome and I did not want to wait in the line anymore so I gave up.

Before I went there, I had checked on the website "Yelp! " that there was a Planetarium Show every hour and need a ticket to get in, so I immediately went to the Planetarium and got my ticket to the Planetarium for 1:30PM.
I waited for three and half hours until the show started. Ay yay yay!!

I then went down a floor and enjoyed a beautiful, relaxing view of fish among beautiful coral reefs in the water tank.

Then I went up to the roof.
There were some interesting things about the building.

1. Recycled denim is used as insulation for the building.

2. A solar canopy around the roof contains 60,000 photovoltaic cells.
The black voltaic cells look like a part of its design and I even did not notice until I saw a sign explaining them.

This solar canopy supplies 5 to 10 percent of the academy's energy needs and prevents the release of more than 405,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

3. The rooftop of the building, called the "Living Roof", is covered with native California flowers.

Typical black tar-and-asphalt building rooftops cause a phenomenon known as the "Urban Heat Island" effect.
The endless swath of black rooftops and pavement trap heat, causing cities to be 6 to 10 degrees warmer than outlying greenbelt areas.
One-sixth of all electricity consumed in the U.S. goes to cool buildings.

The Academy's green rooftop keeps the building's interior an average of 10 degrees cooler than a standard roof would.
The plants also transform carbon dioxide into oxygen, capture rainwater, and reduce energy needs for heating and cooling.

What I liked the most at the Academy were the Aqualium and the turtles.

The Academy was okay to spend a couple of hours at because it was free.
But I would have been so upset if I had to pay $25 to get in there!

バナナと便通

今まで、便秘知らずだった、この私ですが、タバコとお酒をやめてから、便秘に悩まされてます。
昔は、お腹が“ゆるい”くらいだったのに。あの頃が懐かしい。

腹筋を使う運動をしたり（たまに）、野菜もたっぷりとってるし、果物もなるべく摂る様にしてたんだけどね。
その点、ダーリンは、毎朝、ピッタリ決まった時間に便通がきて、羨ましい。
しかも、ゆるすぎず、固すぎず、ちょうどよい感じなの。
同じものを食べてるのになんでこうも違うのか、不思議よね。

色々試して、最近調子がいいのが、バナナ。
バナナダイエットってのが、流行りらしいので、私も試してみた。
朝は、なるべくバナナだけ。
お腹いっぱいになるまでいくらでも食べてもいいんだって。まあ、そんなに食べれるもんじゃないけどね。水を飲むのがちょっとつらいけど、味気なくて。
今のところ、ダイエットの効果はぜんぜんでてないけど（悲）、便通にはきいてるみたい。

『コネティカット州の金髪の女性がヘアカラーリング剤のせいで髪を茶色に染めてしまい、日常生活に支障をきたしたなどとして化粧品メーカーのロレアルを訴えていた裁判で、コネティカット州の裁判所が女性の訴えを退ける判決を言い渡した。

訴えていたのは同州ストラトフォードのシャーロット・フィーニーさん。「金髪」と表示されたロレアルのカラーリング剤を使ったところ、髪が茶色に染まってしまい、元通りの自然な金髪に戻れなくなったとして２００５年に提訴した。

フィーニーさんはブロンドで注目を浴びることができなくなって頭痛や不安感に悩まされ、自宅にこもって帽子をかぶって過ごす日々が続いたと主張。ショックで抗うつ剤を服用しなければならなくなったと述べていた。

裁判所は６日の判決で、「金髪」と表示された箱に茶色のカラーリング剤が入っていたという主張をフィーニーさん側が証明できなかったとして、訴えを退けた。』

もともと金髪ならなんで金髪に染める必要があったのかな？こういうばかげた裁判に、時間とお金が費やされているんですねー

I wonder why did she have to dye her hair into blond if she had naturalblond hair ?The natural blond hair would grow eventually, right?
We should pay attention NOT to this blonde but to that how much time, money,and resources are wasted on the frivolous cases like this.

送別会 Going Away Party

勤務先の先輩Ｋさんが、日本に帰国することになり、サンフランシスコのPalace Hotelに入っている日本食レストラン　KYOYA で、お食事会をしました。

My co-workers and I had a going away party for our senior co-worker, Mr.K last Friday.We did it at the award winning Japanese restaurant "KYOYA" in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

ポキ、つくりたて豆腐、天ぷら、などどれも美味しいけど、メチャメチャ高い！
We ordered a couple of appetizers and one roll sushi.
The food was simply good but it was so pricy, $8 for edamame ?!

値段が気になって、刺身やお寿司をオーダーするのも気が引けて、でも、お腹が満たされないので、刀やラーメンへ移動。刀やラーメンは、お寿司も食べられるし、お酒も美味しいのをおいてるし、おつまみメニューも充実してて、オススメ！いつも混んでます。

We were still hungry but too worried about price to order some more....

We ended up moving to different restaurant "Katanaya-Ramen" that has good sushi, good sake selection and delicious ramen.

Wedding at Zoo ~2~

サンディエゴのWild Animal Park での結婚式にいってきました！
夕方の結婚式まで時間があったので、園内をみてまわってきました。

This weekend I went to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego to attend a wedding ceremony with my friend Yuko.
Before the wedding ceremony started, we walked and took a look at the animals inside the park.Here are some pictures from inside the park.

Wild Animal Parkはこんなカンジ。

ゴリラ。 Gorillas 周りは檻ではなく、水堀で囲まれているんだけど、ゴリラとかチンパンジーは、体中の筋肉の密度が高く脂肪が少ないため、水に浮かないんだって。

前、どこかの動物園でおぼれるチンパンジーを観光客が救出してたのをテレビで見たことあった。

The gorillas' enclosure is surrounded by a moat-- not a metal fence.
Did you know that gorillas and chimps cannot swim and they are scared of water?
They sink in the water because their propotion of muscle to fat is too high. (Muscle is much denser than fat and sinks, fat floats).
I recall I saw a visitor at a zoo rescue a drowning chimp on TV before.

ダリぃってカンジのライオン。なーんにもしてない。

An utterly exhausted, lethargic-looking lion.次にとおりかかかったら寝てた。

広い園内は歩くと結構疲れるのでライドツアーが便利。
Yuko and I paid $10 each and joined a ride tour because the park was too large to walk and it was so hot!!




大好きなゾウのエリア。ちょうど清掃中で、ゾウたちが一箇所に集められれて、近くで見ることができたよ。
ゾウって、おとなしくてゆったりしてるのに、ライオンやトラも一目置いてる、ってカンジでいいよね。

The elephant is one of my favorite animals because he seems so relaxed and calm.
Lions and tigers try to avoid conflict with elephants because an elephant can put one foot down on a lion or tiger and kill it instantly!
When we were at the elephant area, the park staff were cleaning the enclosure.
They put elephants into the corner so that we could take a close look at the elephants.

The couple invited 150 people.
Most of them flew from the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego.
Like every other wedding I have ever attended, this one was so touching and beautiful.

やっぱり結婚式っていいもんです。ジーンとくるなあ。

園内にあるプライベートイベント会場で、レセプションパーティー。

The charter bus carried all wedding guesst to the reception party, held at the pavilion at the park.
Everything was well-arranged. 午後4時で閉園後は、一般のお客さんは一切いないので貸切状態。

最終日は、サンディエゴ湾に浮かぶコロナド島へ。
The next day, Yuko and I drove to Coronado Island.

1887年に立てられた木造のHotel Del Coronadoが有名。
There is a famous hotel " Hotel Del Coronado" on Coronado Island.
It was built in 1887 and made of wood.

夕方のフライトまで、ホテルの目の前に広がるコロナドビーチでのんびり。
Since we were free all day until our evening flight home, we hung around at Coronado Beach.

Wedding at Zoo

今週末は、知り合いの結婚式のため、サンディエゴへ行ってきます。

そのカップルは、San Diego Wild Animal Parkで結婚式をするそうなのです。

San Diego Wild Animal Park は、世界最大級の自然動物園で、広大なサバンナに動物が放し飼いにされているんだって。
新郎が私の友人ゆうこりんの幼馴染で、仲良くさせてもらっている方なのですが、アフリカでツアーガイドなどをやっていたこともあるそうで、動物達に囲まれた結婚式を、ということになったようです。
いったいどんな結婚式なのか、とても楽しみです。

This weekend I'm going to San Diego to attend a wedding ceremony and reception party.

The Groom is a friend of my friend, Yuko.

He used to live and work as a tour guide in Africa for a short time, and decided to have his wedding ceremony at San Diego Wild Animal Park, surrounded by animals.
The 1,800-acre Wild Animal Park now holds 3,500 animals, representing some 430 different species.

The animals roam freely in vast enclosures-- just as they are in Africa!

I am so excited about their unique wedding and seeing the animals !

メタボ対策メニュー Low Carb Recipes

　
週末の土曜日。

お昼は、お友達と一緒にDIM SUM(飲茶)をたんまり食べたので、夜は簡単でサッパリなものを。

今日は、アジア系のスーパーでごぼうが買えたので、さっそくそれらをつかって、ひさびさにごぼうサラダを作りました。

根菜類ばかりになっちゃったので、ゆで卵でたんぱく質をとればいいかな、と。

【本日のお献立】

ごぼうサラダ
油菜のおひたし
きのこマリネ
山芋千切り
ゆで卵（半分）

きのこマリネは、最近のお気に入り。ビールとも合うし、冷奴、サラダのトッピングなんかにも使えます。ベーコンを加えてパスタとからめてもいいかも！大量に作っておいて保存しておけるので便利です。

【きのこマリネ】
しいたけ　→しいたけは1個を8等分くらいに切る
しめじ　→いしづきをとってばらばらにする
塩オリーブオイルにんにく　→2-3ミリの厚さに薄切り唐辛子

①オーブン皿にアルミホイルをしき、きのこを平たく並べる。

②塩、オリーブオイルをまわしがけする。塩はまんべんなくたっぷり。
③オーブンで焼き、水分を飛ばす
④その間に、オリーブオイルを熱して、にんにくをこんがり色に熱する。火をとめて唐辛子を入れる。

⑤水分がとんで乾いたきのこをオーブンから取り出し、④のオリーブを絡ませる。
⑥冷蔵庫で保存。

Last weekend I had Dim Sum for lunch with my friend in Oakland's Chinatown.

That night, I tried to eat something easy and balanced-- low-carb and heavy on vegetables, for dinner.A boiled egg provided protein.

The other ingredients were vegetable and roots.

【Today's menu】
Gobo (burdock root) and carrot salad
Boiled Chinese broccoli seasoned with soy sauce and dashijiru(Japanese soup stock) Broiled marinated mushroomNagaimo (Japanese mountain yam) seasoned with soy sauce and dashijiru (Japanese soup stock)
Boiled egg

Broiled Marinated Mushroom is my recent favorite.
It works as a beer snack or as a salad topping.
It could be good tossed with pasta and crispy bacon.

【Gobo】Gobo root is the Japanese name for the root of the greater burdock plant. Utilized as both a vegetable and a seasoning agent, gobo root is also prized for the medicinal properties attributed to it.

Nutritional Value:Gobo root is a good source of fiber and potassium and is low in sodium and calories.A 3/4-cup (85 g) serving has about 60 calories and no fat.

Medicinal Uses:Gobo, or burdock, root is traditionally valued for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.

It is highly esteemed as a blood detoxifier, a diuretic, and a topical remedy for maladies of the skin, including psoriasis and acne.

In Chinese herbal medicine, it is used in concert with other herbs to allay the discomfort of sore throats and colds.

Labor Day Weekend in Humboldt

Labor Dayの週末は、ダーリンのお友達が住む、Humboldt カウンティへいってきました。

My darling and I went to Humboldt county to visit our friend Ed.

お友達が勤めるゴルフ場にて。

Ed works at Benbow Hotel & Resort. He let us drive a golf cart.

Jeepで山道を走り、海へ！We drove our shiny Yellow Jeep along the mountain road and hit the beach!

前回Humboldtにいったとき、行きかうJeep Wranglerを見て、“いいなー夢のクルマだわー”って言ってたのに、今回はそのJeep Wranglerを運転しているなんて！

Last time when I came to Humboldt, I saw many Jeep Wranglers on the highway and wished I owned and drove one. I was dreaming about a yellow, soft top Jeep Wrangler. Now I am driving it! Isn't it amazing?

ありがとうダーリン！！　Arigato "darling"!!
